Men & Chicken (Yeah, It's Literally Means Half Men and Half Chicken, Though It's Not Exactly Half)
Cool title right? (I know it's ugly and cringey, but I thought it's funny and I'd go for it. I bet I'll regret it as soon as I published it, so yeah, just laugh it off if you want). Contains spoiler, so read at your own risk.
Men & Chicken (or Mænd og Høns in Danish) is a 2015 movie created by Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen. It stars Mads Mikkelsen (yea my boi), David Dencik, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Søren Malling, and Nicholas Bro.
Not going to lie but I really watch this movie only because Mads was in it. And then it all turned 180 degrees and I madly in love with this movie. Also I began to discovered that this is not the only film Mads and Anders is involved (yes I'm eyeing on you, Adam's Apples).
First thing first, the film was hella weird. Like it's beyond weird (I mean duh, people with animals DNA seriously?) that you actually finds it interesting and you decided to gave it a shot. I watched this movie twice, and the first time I watched it, I kind of liked it. But that's that. And then I watched it again, and it's actually really good. So if anyone reading this who hates weird movies and doesn't have that enough curiosity, good bye.
The moral of this movie wasn't as weird as the movie, per se. It's about how family must stick together until the end and blah blah blah. But what's so unique about this film is that how the director and the story itself tells us the other side about being in a weird family.
And what I mean by that is this character, Gabriel. Gabriel is just like normal people (well except his harelip. Though, it's not that noticeable than the rest of them). And that's the point turner about this whole film. Non-weird person surrounded by a total weirdos. He's like the bridge between two worlds.
Not to mention Elias, Gregor, Franz, and Josef's unique personalities. Elias is this weird middle aged man who's suffering Peter Pan syndrome (sort of), and *ehm* likes do the do with himself. Gregor has a heart of a poet, he likes sewing, meeting girls and cooking. Franz is the tough one, he likes beating the shit out of people, making rules and make sure everyone follows it, and insanely protective over his brothers. While Josef is that genius outcast kid, who no one appreciate him as he deserves (also high five because we're cheese maniac).
But it's all starting to make sense as you became closer to the end (like every aspects of the film really made sense at the end. And if it don't, go watch it again. Some people do takes time to understand something, right?). Another plus about this movie. A lot of other weird movies wanted to "slap" the watchers by making the ending so great that they just left it hanging in the most questioning, unsatisfying, and unworthy way. Men & Chicken didn't do that.
They formed a really solid base for the story and finished it with that cherry on top, a perfection leading up from a really good start. You can literally feel that this movie was so confident, that they didn't need to leave the ending hanging, hoping for a sequel or something. It's inspiring.
The comedy was also nice. Not generally comedic, but it's enough. Many says that the film was hella funny, but I don't necessarily agree with that. But maybe that's because I don't fully understand Danish/Scandinavian comedic matter. Either way, it's fun.
Is it dark? Yep, without doubt. Though, it's not a psycho or a serial killer movie but it's indeed dark. I mean come on, human with partly animals DNA was disturbing enough.
So overall, it's weirdly good with a pinch of uniqueness and heart-warming with the ending. 9/10. Definitely recommended.
(Okay I noticed that I used a lot of the word 'weird', but really, that's the whole movie was about. Also biggest applause to Anders Thomas Jensen because this is my literal cup of tea. Mads Mikkelsen's acting was superb, cute, lovely, and one of the reason why this movie was so great, I love him so much).
Until next time, chickens (see what I did there?)
